Roll a Fisherman Upgrades Guide: What to Buy First, in Order
The community purchase order: automation first, then income, then speed — with observed Cash and Gold prices and the rebirth-gated item to expect.

What upgrade should I buy first in Roll a Fisherman?
What do the Gold upgrades do?
Why is speed the last priority?
The purchase order
The community-tested order for Cash and Gold:
- Automation — auto-collect and auto-sell. They end the manual 30-second loop and stop the two silent leaks: missed fish and full storage.
- Income — Earning-efficiency upgrades that raise the basic fish cycle payout. Every later improvement multiplies a bigger base.
- Speed — Fishing Speed, once the dock and storage can absorb the extra catch.
- Luck (Gold) — Catch Luck and Roll Luck when rolls feel weak; Mutation Luck once you mutate regularly.
- Endgame — balance whatever the current bottleneck is; at that point you know your dock better than any guide.
Automation: the two purchases that change the game
Auto-collect gathers fish so the manual dock walk stops losing output — players observed it priced around 300 (currency unconfirmed in-shop). Auto-sell clears common fish to storage automatically, preventing the full-warehouse stall that breaks your offline earnings night. One warning travels with auto-sell: it will happily eat mythic fish and rebirth requirements — the common mistakes list tells you when to switch it off.
The shop also sells bundles: auto-collect, double fishing speed, double cash, double roll speed — check whether the bundle undercuts buying the single upgrade you actually want.
The upgrade menu, item by item
| Upgrade | Currency | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-collect | Cash (observed ~300) | Fish are collected without the manual walk |
| Auto-sell | Cash | Commons sell automatically; dangerous around rare fish |
| Earning efficiency | Cash | Raises Cash from the basic fish cycle |
| Sell for 10% more cash | Cash | +10% on sales |
| Fishing Speed | Gold | Fish become available faster |
| Catch Luck | Gold | Better catch quality (~2,600 Gold observed for a late tier) |
| Mutation Luck | Gold | Better machine odds |
| Roll Luck | Gold | Better roll results |
| ??? (rebirth-gated) | Gold | At least one upgrade is locked until you rebirth |
Speed: why it comes third
Fishing Speed raises the rate at which fish become available — and nothing else. If buckets are full, the dock is full, or storage is backed up, the extra speed produces nothing: “speed alone may not solve the problem” is the community’s phrasing. Buy it after automation and income, and re-check the dock guide if you cannot tell where your line is clogged.
Gold upgrades and the comparison habit
Gold buys Fishing Speed, Catch Luck, Mutation Luck, and Roll Luck — and the same Gold buys mutations. One wallet, two sinks. Before every purchase, name the current bottleneck: weak rolls (buy Catch/Roll Luck), slow buckets (Fishing Speed), or a high-value catch waiting (bank the Gold for the machine). The worked example is in the Gold guide: a player with 2,600 Gold skipped a sell-price upgrade, bought Catch Luck twice, and banked the rest for a divine mutation.
The rebirth connection
Two upgrade-adjacent levers live behind rebirth: at least one shop item is rebirth-gated, and every rebirth permanently multiplies income (1.5x) while raising luck and offline caps. If the upgrade menu feels unaffordable, the cheapest real upgrade might be the first rebirth at 100,000 Cash — it makes every subsequent Cash and Gold purchase hit harder.
